Technology

It has been a few months since I’ve started to restrict my time on social media and Youtube to only 30 minutes a day. It felt like there was much more time per day but most importantly, I had more time to think.

When I rode the subway, I would always be on my phone scrolling through Instagram or playing games. Now that I literally have nothing to do on my phone, I looked around me and nearly 90% of the people in the subway had their eyes glued to their phones. I thought that maybe everyone is almost addicted to this feeling that they have to be doing something all the time. It made me come to the realization that humans need time to do nothing. It’s part of human nature to feel boredom and just zone out. Going on our phones all the time is making us think less and leading us to think only in one way (what is on our phone). We need to let our brain think whatever it wants to think which I believe can help increase our creativity.

Even when I was at the hair salon these two kids around 4 and 6 years old had their faces attached to their phones. They wouldn’t even listen to what their mom was saying because they were too busy watching Youtube for almost 2 hours. I am genuinely worried about our future generation because children are already addicted to going on their phones.

I’m glad that I chose reading for my 20% Time project because I feel more aware of my surroundings. I feel like our obsession with technology will only get worse and humans will eventually stop reading books (like the world from Fahrenheit 451). We should be promoting reading to children by not saying things like “it will make you smarter” or “it will help you get good grades in school.” Instead, we should encourage kids to read by taking them to the library often rather than sending them to a bunch of academies. Our society will only get worse if we let kids hold onto their phones all day.
